The strike-out, written down

Write both names in capitals and drop anything that is not A–Z. For each letter of the alphabet, subtract the smaller count from the larger. Add those leftovers. That integer is your step size. Starting at F, hop that many seats around the shrinking list F-L-A-M-E-S, removing one letter each round, always continuing from the next survivor. The last letter names the category.

That is the entire engine. No secret weight for vowels, no gender field, no “seed” that changes at midnight. If two sites disagree, they are almost certainly hopping from a different starting index or cancelling repeats differently.

The six landings

Friends

The leftover-letter walk stopped on F. In the playground version, that is the “we get along” card — tea, group chats, no plot twist required.

Lovers

L survived the strike-out. The game’s most screenshot-friendly answer. Remember it is still a counting rhyme.

Affectionate

A remained. Softer than Lovers in the old mnemonic: fondness without the full movie ending.

Marriage

M is the last letter standing. Classrooms treated this as the jackpot. Treat it as a punchline unless a registrar is involved.

Enemies

E won the cycle. Usually the result people demand a rematch for. Change a letter, get a new cartoon villain.

Siblings

S is left. The joke is “you fight like family.” Not a kinship test.

FAQ

Where did FLAMES come from?+

It spread as a paper game in schools: write two names, cross shared letters, count the rest, and skip around F-L-A-M-E-S. There is no classical jyotish text behind it. It is closer to a counting-out rhyme than to a matching kundli.

Does order of names matter?+

For this implementation, no. Cancellation uses letter counts, not left-to-right order, so “Rohit / Priya” and “Priya / Rohit” leave the same remainder and the same final word.

Are spaces and surnames used?+

Spaces and punctuation are dropped. Letters in a surname do count if you type them. “Rohit Jha” is a different pile of letters than “Rohit.”

Can I get a different answer than a friend’s app?+

Yes. Some versions cancel only the first match, some ignore repeated letters, some start the FLAMES pointer in another place. Ours is documented in the method section so you can audit it.
